Di Smith
I am a creative living and working in the beautiful small town of Prince Albert nestled at the base of the Swartberg Mountains in the Great Karoo, South Africa.
Welcome to my art site

I am a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist, my work has grown from instinct, curiosity, and engagement with the world around me. My sculpture is often conceptual, shaped by lived experience and the things I feel most strongly about — an attempt to give form to ideas that are difficult to put into words.
The Japanese aesthetic of Wabi Sabi - imperfect, impermanent and incomplete resonates closely with me, this is reflected in my love of found objects and organic materials, I believe that there is real beauty in things that once had another life, and my assemblage gives them new life!
My landscape work is Karoo- centric — that vast, sparce terrain where openness feels less like emptiness and more like breathing room. Big skies, sunlight, stillness, and the distant mountains that break the horizon like a desert signature.
As an artist all I really want is to get lost in the creative process and evoke thought, emotion, or comment from the viewer. My wish for the world, would be for everyone to create something. Creating allows us to grow, learn, express, understand, respect, and value.
